Over the years, I've learned that it's absolutely essential to look after my mental health as much as I look after my physical well-being. As the stresses and strains of life catch up with us, we begin to realise that maintaining good mental health is paramount. Mental health affects everything! One effective way I've found to to achieve this is by cultivating a daily mindfulness habit. Mindfulness involves being fully present in the moment and acknowledging thoughts without judgment. Literally just sitting and listening to the birds or doing five minutes of deep breathing can make the world of difference and significantly contribute to overall mental well-being.
A daily mindfulness routine enhances resilience, allowing individuals to bounce back from life's challenges more effectively. By staying grounded in the present, people can better navigate stress and anxiety, fostering a sense of control over their mental state. The good news is that it doesn't require extensive time commitments. A ten minute mediation session, in the morning, calms me down and sets me up for the day.
One brilliant and accessible way to practice mindfulness is through art, specifically watercolour painting. Engaging in this colourful, creative activity not only serves as a mindful escape but also allows individuals to express themselves freely. Carving out a mere 20 minutes for a painting session provides a therapeutic outlet, aiding in stress reduction and promoting relaxation. If I've had a stressful day, the best thing I can do to rejuvenate myself is to sit down and swish paint on the paper. It doesn't matter what I create or how it even turns out. The very act of just focusing on one thing and expressing my creativity is extremely healing.
The beauty of a daily mindfulness habit is its inclusivity. It doesn't demand specialised skills or resources; anyone can integrate it into their routine. Whether it's a brief moment of mindful breathing or a quick artistic endeavour, these practices are accessible to everyone.
In a world where the demands on our mental well-being are relentless, dedicating a small portion of each day to mindfulness becomes an investment in ourselves. It's a pragmatic approach to fostering resilience, handling stress, and maintaining good mental health.
So, get yourself a decent set of watercolours, paper and paintbrushes and get swishing!
